Derwent Angling Association makes front page of Trout and Salmon

Just in case anyone hadn’t noticed, the club is featured on the front page of November’s Trout and Salmon. The story in the magazine is an account by Paul Procter of a day’s wild trout fishing at The Sneep, above Allensford and is well worth a look. The issue probably won’t be on the shelves for too much longer now, so anyone who fancies a copy would be advised to get down to their newsagent ASAP.

Lost reel at Crooked Oak

A member writes: “After checking my gear to clean it last weekend I discovered that I had lost my reel. The last place I used it was when I parked at the Crooked Oak approximately six weeks or so ago, near the gas/waterworks area.

The missing reel is a black Hardy Uniqua, in its pouch, and it had a white Snowbee double tapered line loaded on it.”

It’s a bit of a long shot we know, but if anyone did find it, its owner would be extremely grateful for its safe return. Drop us a line if you can help.

The new bridge at Shotley Bridge

At long last, the new footbridge at Shotley Bridge is in place with a grand opening planned for some time in September. We’ll let you know the date as soon as we know ourselves, but in the meantime if you’ve not been down there over the past few weeks, this is what’s been going on. Lost: two fly boxes

I was fishing on the 24th June, first at Crooked Oak (Black Pool area) and after at Ebchester and I managed to lose two small (but treasured) aluminium clip fly boxes, one with small dry and one with small wet flies. Could you fly fish for England?

Are you between 12-16 years old (on 31st August 2011)? Do you want to represent the North East region and then England in fly fishing? Would you like to be coached by some of the best flyfishers and coaches including well-known internationals Simon Robinson and Scott Nellins and former England Youth team members Carl Malpass and Josh Felton.

The Angling Development Board will be hosting a regional selection event to find the most talented game anglers that have the ability to go on and represent the North East in regional competitions and ultimately to fish for the England Youth Flyfishing Team.

The initial event will cost £5 per entry; this includes your fishing permit.

As we dust off our waders for the new season, it’s worth bearing in mind that as the trout start thinking about a bite to eat, then so do some other rather less pleasant characters. According to the Health Protection Agency, up to 3,000 people contract Lyme disease (Borreliosis) from the bite of an infected tick each year in the UK.

Tick Bite Prevention Week, which runs from 11-17 April, is an annual programme which helps promote awareness of tick-borne diseases and effective tick bite prevention for at-risk groups, ie, people who spend a lot of time outdoors, like anglers. A dedicated website has been launched offering advice on what to do if bitten and how to stay protected in the warmer months at www.tickbitepreventionweek.org.

As they used to say on Hill Street Blues… Let’s be careful out there.

The North of England Fly Fishing Show is the only show of its kind in north east England. Trout and salmon anglers from the North East and further afield have the opportunity to view, try and buy, in one location, a massive selection of rods, reels, fly lines, fly tying materials and equipment, flies, hooks, tippet materials, sports clothing, etc, in anticipation of the coming season.

The 2011 show will see more new attractions following on from last year’s successful show including many new fly tying demonstrations projected onto display screens, allowing you to see all those skills in more detail, with plenty of question and answer sessions with all the flytiers. Included in the attractions will be additional presentational talks on a variety of subjects such as small stillwater fishing, competition fishing, and salmon fishing in Canada.
