The river is located in the Derwent
Valley which, in part, forms the border between the counties of Northumberland
and Durham.
The source of the river is in the
hills above the Derwent Reservoir and from here it flows through the Derwent
valley to join the river Tyne near the famous 'Metro Centre', a few miles
upstream from the now world renowned quayside area of Newcastle.
The main town nearest to the river
is Consett, with a once world-wide reputation for it's steel making and
more recently for it's Phileas Fogg snacks.
The town of Consett is almost equi-distant
from the historical and beautiful city of Durham.
